For over 3 years now RODI has planted thousands of trees in Kenya through the support of the green searing engine ECOSIA and its partner the GLS Future Foundation for Development.
RODI’s initiative aims to highlight the power of collaboration between local communities, organizations, and governmental bodies in driving positive change.
By involving members of the community in tree planting activities, RODI fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility for environmental conservation, empowering individuals to take an active role in preserving their natural surroundings.
The initiative targets to plant and grow 400,000 trees by May 2024 in public spaces and communal land to contribute through that to global reforestation efforts, restoring lost forests, repairing damaged ecosystems and mitigating and adapting to climate change among communities.
latest tree planting activity took place in Ol Donyo Sabuk , where the members of the community and staff for RODI came together to plant trees.
Tree planting activities have been taking place in RODI Kenya and are spread across Machakos, Kiambu, Nyeri, Laikipia and Nyandarua county. They are grown in public places, communal land as well as on farm .
Comprehensive effort has been put towards ensuring that these trees survive. Monitoring of the trees has been done post planting to ensure their long term survival. With 320,000 trees planted since 2021 RODI has recorded a survival rate of over 90%. These goes to show how successful this project has been.
This success rate not only means a diversification of biodiversity and mitigation of the effects of climate change, but also an improvement of livelihood for local farmers through adoption and integration of agro-ecological practices of farming and tree planting systems such as the production and use of bio-fertilizers, soil and water conservation and natural resource management.
