GLS Future Foundation Visits RODI Kenya Projects in Ruiru and Nyeri

The visit showcased the impact of agroecology, forest restoration, sustainable farming technologies, and community-led livelihood initiatives.

RODI Kenya recently welcomed Dr. Annette Massmann and Laura Benning  from GLS Future Foundation for a visit to its projects in Ruiru and Nyeri. The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to interact with beneficiaries, observe ongoing activities, and learn how sustainable agricultural practices and environmental conservation initiatives are contributing to improved livelihoods.

From agricultural activities at Ruiru Prison to forest restoration at Nyeri Hill and coffee farming in surrounding communities, the visit highlighted the importance of practical training, community participation, and partnerships in promoting sustainable development.

Exploring Agricultural Innovations at Ruiru Prison

The visit began at Ruiru Prison, where the delegation was guided by Mr.  Kioko, the head of the prison farm. The team toured the coffee nurseries and vegetable gardens and learned about the agricultural technologies and sustainable farming methods introduced through RODI Kenya's training and support.

The visit demonstrated how practical agricultural knowledge and improved farming techniques can support food production and sustainable agricultural practices within correctional facilities.

Witnessing Forest Restoration at Nyeri Hill

In Nyeri, the GLS Future Foundation delegation visited the Nyeri Hill forest restoration project to observe the progress of trees planted approximately three years ago. The trees had grown well, demonstrating progress in the ongoing restoration efforts.

The team also participated in a tree-planting activity alongside community members and RODI Kenya staff ,reinforcing RODI Kenya's commitment to environmental conservation and community-led forest restoration.

During the visit, the delegation interacted with members of the Nyeri Hill Community Welfare Group and farmers who have benefited from RODI Kenya's training programmes.

Mr. Charlse maina, Chairman of the Nyeri Hill Community Welfare Group, shared how the community's farming practices have advanced since the introduction of RODI Kenya's training and support. He noted that farmers have experienced improved yields and better access to fresh vegetables through agroecological farming methods that reduce reliance on synthetic chemicals.

Building Skills for Sustainable Livelihoods

The delegation visited farmers and observed various agricultural technologies and livelihood activities promoted through RODI Kenya's programmes.

These included bokashi production, ash-based crop treatments, fish farming, dairy farming, and the use of energy-saving cookstoves. Community members have also received training in making liquid soap, shampoo, and bar soap, equipping them with practical skills that can create additional income-generating opportunities.

These initiatives demonstrate how agroecology and livelihood diversification can help communities improve food security, strengthen household resilience, and adopt more sustainable ways of living.

A Coffee Farmer's Experience with Agroecology

One of the notable experiences shared during the visit was that of Mr. Benjamin karanja, a coffee farmer with many years of experience.

Mr. Benjamin karanja explained that before adopting agroecological farming methods, he harvested approximately one kilogram of coffee per bush. After adopting these practices, he reported an increase in production to around five kilograms per bush.

His experience highlights the potential of agroecological practices to improve coffee production and demonstrates the value of farmer training, practical demonstrations, and the adoption of sustainable agricultural techniques.

Understanding the Coffee Processing Chain in Kihuyo coffee factory

The visit also included a tour of a coffee processing factory in Kihuyo. The GLS Future Foundation delegation had the opportunity to learn about the coffee processing chain, from washing the harvested coffee to drying it on raised drying tables.

The tour provided valuable insight into the processes that follow harvesting and the importance of coffee processing in maintaining quality and connecting farmers to the wider agricultural value chain.

Strengthening Partnerships for Lasting Impact

The visit by GLS Future Foundation provided an opportunity to appreciate the work undertaken by RODI Kenya alongside communities and institutional partners.

From agricultural innovation at Ruiru Prison to forest restoration at Nyeri Hill and improved farming practices among coffee growers, the visit highlighted how practical training, environmental stewardship, and community participation can contribute to sustainable development.

RODI Kenya appreciates GLS Future Foundation's engagement and the continued efforts of farmers, communities, and partners working to improve livelihoods, restore natural ecosystems, and promote sustainable agriculture.
