Cooking Smarter: Community Members in Mukurwe-ini Learn to Make Fireless Cookers

Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County – What if food could continue cooking even after the fire is switched off? This simple yet innovative idea was at the centre of a practical fireless cooker-making training held at Githungo Coffee Factory in Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County.

The training brought community members together to learn how to make and use fireless cookers, an energy-saving cooking solution that uses retained heat to continue cooking food without requiring continuous heating.

Turning Simple Materials into Sustainable Solutions

During the training, participants gained practical skills in making fireless cookers and understanding how they work. The process demonstrated how locally accessible materials can be transformed into useful household cooking solutions that promote energy efficiency and sustainable living.

A fireless cooker works by retaining heat within an insulated container. Once food has been brought to a boil, it is placed inside the cooker, where the retained heat continues the cooking process. This reduces the need to keep food over a fire for extended periods.

Saving Energy, Protecting Trees and Reducing Household Costs

Fireless cookers offer several benefits to households and the environment. By reducing the amount of time food stays on a fire, they can help households save firewood and other cooking fuels, lower cooking expenses and reduce pressure on forests.

The technology also provides an opportunity to promote more sustainable household practices while encouraging communities to adopt affordable and practical energy-saving innovations.

Building Skills for Sustainable Communities

The training at Githungo Coffee Factory reflects the importance of equipping communities with practical knowledge and skills that can be applied in everyday life.

Through initiatives that promote energy efficiency, environmental conservation and locally appropriate solutions, RODI Kenya continues to support communities in exploring practical ways of improving livelihoods while protecting the environment.

Sometimes, the smartest way to cook is knowing when to turn off the fire.
